RV Trip to the High Mountains Day 1 - Saturday, September 22, 2018 Spring to Roswell |
||||||||||||||
The mission of this epic 2 week trip was to make memories. From the length and breadth of this report and the 1,619 photos it contains, I think I can safely state: Mission Accomplished.
As I'm finally sitting down to write this, it's been 7 months since the trip and some of the details are a bit fuzzy. For instance, I don't remember much about the first day. The stop at Buc-ee's, seeing wind turbines, and that righteous sunset are the only highlights in my mind.
The day before the departure, I took the day off of work and my father-in-law, George, drove me over to Kingwood to get the RV. Everything went smoothly and we ended up with a truck only a few months old. It had 16K miles on it. Practically NEW! I took that as a good sign that we would have a good trip. And, we did!
The afternoon and evening of the 21st were spent cleaning and loading the RV. Mary (mother-in-law) and I started the cleaning process. Michele and Mary finished it that evening while George and I loaded about a ton of luggage and supplies. We over-packed, but we wanted to be prepared for every contingency. My brother came over to lend a hand and his help was very much appreciated.
We were all up late and departure the next morning was delayed. Of course. And when we did finally leave, we got about a mile down the road when Michele realized we'd left all the frozen veggies. So, back to the house we went. I don't remember now what time we actually got on I45, but it was about 3 hours later than planned.
Queue up "Holiday Road" from the National Lampoon movies... We're OFF!
The requisite stop at Buc-ee's was big fun for Noah. He got a new bag of polished rocks to carry around. It looked real dark when we got outside and started walking to the RV. No sooner than we'd closed the door, the bottom fell out of a massive thunder storm. It was the kind of storm where you can't see more than about 100'. It was a full-on gully washer.
The rest of the day is a blur. We drove into an amazing sunset just past the Texas/New Mexico border and got to the Red Barn RV Park in Roswell just after dark. Our first night on the road was quite easy. The park was great.
