RGX 2012 - Trip Report
June 14 - June 23
Day 7 - Wednesday, June 20
Written for the Winter 2012 Edition of The Dispatch
Day 3 was started with another beautiful, cool summer morning.
While playing phone tag with Firetide tech support regarding licensing the nodes, Joe and I did some recon to figure out the placement of the primary node and antennas.
John's plan called for mounting a node on the north side of the Depot. We quickly realized how intrusive this would be. So, we came up with the idea of mounting the node inside the attic of the bathroom building, with the antennas under the eves with line-of-sight to the Bunkhouse and Tipple. This solved the problem of ruining the appearance of a historic structure, but created the problem of getting an internet connection to the node from the Depot. The best solution was to dig a trench between the two buildings and lay PVC conduit for a CAT6 cable. So, while waiting for tech support to return my calls, Joe and I dug. In fact, most of Day 3 was spent digging.
Chama's location at 7800 feet doesn't usually bother me. However, on this day I noticed...
I believe this was the day that John realized that we didn't have all of the hardware necessary to complete the project. There was no way to get what was needed in time. So, I made the decision to head home after the weekend and not stay for Work Session D as planned. Doing this would let me save my vacation time to return in the fall to finish. John approved the plan.
