The Southern Forest Heritage Museum based in Long Leaf, LA is one of the up-and-coming premier historic properties in the South. Long Leaf was once the center of three logging towns owned and operated by the Crowell Lumber Company. Long Leaf was shut down and more or less mothballed in the 1950's preserving a remarkable time-capsule of the old south, the lumber industry, and the railroads that supported them.

In a lot of ways Long Leaf reminds me of Chama, NM. It's a nearly complete town with equally complete railroad facilities. It's also very isolated from the rest of society and gives you a great feeling for what life back then must have been like.

I will post occasional Trip Reports here, but most of my RR&G media will be on the RR&G website: RedRiverAndGulf.net
