The San Juan Extension
Toltec Gorge
The Toltec Gorge begins roughly where Rio de Los Pinos leaves the Los Pinos Valley. Heading east from Los Pinos, the railroad runs parallel to Osier offering some very nice views, esp. near Cascade Trestle. Between Osier and Sublette you can find some of the most dramatic views, including the most scenic near Rock Tunnel.
Past Rock Tunnel the gorge begins to flatten out into a broad valley. The railroad runs near the Los Pinos river all the way to Antonito. A few miles beyond Antonito the Rio de Los Pinos empties into the Rio Grande on it's way south to Santa Fe, Texas, and the Gulf of Mexico. |
